Now that photobucket seems to be working again I guess I'll post a WIP I've been working on for a few months. This isn't a kit you see built very often, actually you don't see the 1:1 Capri's around much anymore either.
This is the kit I started with
The kit comes with a 2.8L V-6, since I'm building this for the Cannonball Run CBP over on Scale Auto, a V-6 wasn't gonna cut it so I decided to swap in a Boss 302 from the AMT 69 Cougar kit.
A few modifications needed to be made to do this swap. First, the oil pan needed to be modified.
The front sump pan is now a rear sump.
The next modification was to the trans tunnel.
The easiest modification was just a matter of leaving out the stock kit firewall piece, that allowed more room in the engine compartment and let me set the engine back for better weight distribution.
I also had to relocate the trans cross member, I just cut the stock piece from the chassis and moved it back a few mm. I didn't take pics of it but if you look at some of the earlier chassis pics and the later ones you might notice that it is moved.
Next up was the rear end, I'm not sure what those Euro Fords used but I decided to swap in a 9" from a AMT 67 Mustang GT parts kit I had laying around. I used the leaf springs from the Capri kit since they were the right length and narrowed the Mustang 9" to fit the Capri's rear track, I also scratchbuilt some traction bars.
The Capri kit came with 2 different front and 2 different rear valances and sets of bumpers, stock and "custom". The stock bumpers are very "blocky" looking government mandated pieces that didn't look very good so I decided to use the "custom" bumpers which look like the Euro spec bumpers that were used on earlier year Capris (they are also chrome instead of body color).
Here I went with the "custom" rear valance that is the second pic.
In front, I went with the "stock" valance.
When I bought the kit off eBay the stock and "custom" wheels and tires were both missing. I would have used the stock wheels as they looked like Camponolo's like you normally see on Pantera's, the "custom" wheels were a not very good looking wire wheel. What was in the box when I got it though was a set of BBS style wheels with rubber tires, this turned out to be a good thing as they look perfect for this build and this car.
I tried another option, Magnum 500's and Good Year's, didn't work....the BBS's stay.
On to the roll cage, I started to try to build a roll cage using pieces from the Dukes of Hazard kit as seen here.
I just didn't like the look of it and it didn't seem to fit the roof inside the car very well though. So, I ended up scratchbuilding a cage that I'm much happier with.
Interior was painted black and the floor was flocked.
Since this is being built for the Cannonball Run, I decided to leave out the rear seat and replace it with an auxiliary fuel cell, and electric fuel pump. They would be mounted under this box that I built to fit in the rear seat area. I won't actually be adding the fuel cell since it would never be seen.
Moving on to the color, I wanted something subdued that wouldn't attract attention of law enforcement so I decided on Testors One Coat Bronze, it also happens to match the Winston's that I smoke.
There will also be a silver stripe painted just above the lower body line, and a red decal stripe separating the silver from the bronze. Everything below the lower body line will be semi-gloss black. The silver is painted already and I just clear coated things about a half hour ago. I don't have pics because the way that I masked the silver it doesn't look pretty right now, once I get the black on there I will get updated pics of the body.
That's where I am right now on this build, as you can tell I still have most of the engine build up to do. There are a few mods there that I'll cover in the next few posts, there are also a few more things before I wrap up the interior. I hope you've enjoyed following along. Questions and comments are welcome.
